Sur les traces de Van Gogh — Précieuses photographies de Gustave Coquiot
In Auvers-sur-Oise, the exhibition "Au plus près de Van Gogh" (Closer to Van Gogh), jointly organized by the Galerie Fonseca and the Institut Van Gogh, officially opened on April 3, 2026.
This exhibition presents a series of precious and previously unseen photographs related to Vincent van Gogh. These images come from the critic, collector, and art historian Gustave Coquiot.
A photographic album never revealed until now: from this album, we can trace, starting from Auvers, Van Gogh's final footsteps, as well as the path of light and shadow traveled there by the Impressionist artists.
As an art historian at the heart of the Parisian art circle, an "initiate" and witness to the Parisian avant-garde, Coquiot wrote numerous biographies and critical studies on Picasso, Degas, Renoir, Cézanne, Rodin, and Van Gogh. These unpublished photographs realistically retrace the last seventy days of Vincent van Gogh's life: his movements, the landscapes he painted, and the real environments in which he lived. They thus allow us to confront Van Gogh's striking late-period works with the real world.
